Working in multiple languages with Legartis

Language settings and foreign-language documents

You can set the languages you work in with Legartis at several levels. You can also have the Legal Agent read, review, edit and translate documents in other languages.

1. Your language settings

1.1 Dictation languages

Where: In the settings, you'll find the field "Dictation languages".

How: Enter the languages you dictate in, for example German and English. You can also simply tell the Legal Agent in the chat, and it will add the languages for you.

Each new list replaces the previous one.

Only choose the 2–3 languages you actually speak. Each additional language makes recognition slightly less accurate.

The language is not detected automatically. If nothing is set, the microphone listens in the interface language. For you, this is currently German.

1.2 Interface language

Available: German, English, French.

Where: You set it in your user settings. The Legal Agent cannot confirm the exact menu item from here. You can also ask it in the chat, for example: "Switch the interface to English".

1.3 Response language of the Legal Agent

Available: Any language supported by the product. For you, this is currently set to German.

This setting is independent of the interface language. For example, you can have the Legal Agent respond in English while the interface stays in German.

The Legal Agent cannot reliably name a dedicated menu item for this. The easiest way is to tell it in the chat, for example "Reply to me in French from now on". It will then change the setting permanently.

If you only want a single response in another language, just add it to your message, for example "in English, please". You don't need to change any settings for that.

1.4 Playbook languages

Where: Under Playbooks.

How: You set the languages when creating a playbook. You then maintain requirements and standard clauses for each language.

When editing existing playbooks, the Legal Agent can help you directly in the chat, for example if you want to add a standard clause in another language.

1.5 Document language

You don't need to set this. The language is determined by the document itself, and review and editing take place in that language.

2. Foreign-language documents

Reading, summarizing, answering questions: The Legal Agent reads the document in its original language and responds to you in your response language. Verbatim quotes remain in the original language.

Editing: The Legal Agent can edit Word documents in any language directly. Changes appear as Word Track Changes, which you can accept or reject. The Legal Agent writes new wording in the language of the document.

Translating: The Legal Agent translates contracts, deeds and letters between German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Dutch and many other languages. The following applies:

  • Amounts, dates and deadlines are carried over unchanged.

  • For amounts, the Legal Agent checks whether the contract means a total sum or an increase by a certain amount. For example, "per CHF x" means "to a total of CHF x", not "by CHF x".

  • Every translation includes a note that only the original is binding.

  • Before delivery, the Legal Agent automatically checks the translation against the original.

Comparing: The Legal Agent can also compare documents in different languages side by side, such as a German and an English version of a contract.

3. Playbooks and contract review

The review against a playbook runs on the document in its own language. You'll see the results and suggested corrections in the Review. See section 1.4 for how to set a playbook's languages.

Tip: If you regularly review English or French contracts, your playbook should include these languages, for example with an approved template clause in German and one in English. That way, standard clauses in the contract language can also be approved automatically.

4. Legal sources

Laws and court decisions are available in the official language of each country: Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein in German, France in French, the EU, the United Kingdom and the USA in English, the Netherlands in Dutch, Chile in Spanish, and China in Chinese.

Swiss court decisions are available in German, French and Italian. Swiss commentaries are in German.

You can still ask your questions in your own language. The Legal Agent searches in the appropriate language and summarizes the results in your response language.
